Bamboo – Phase II

The bamboo arrived late on Monday, and for the past two days “Bob” has been unpacking and sorting it by hue and grain. That’s 42 boxes of 12 planks each. Whew!

It turns out that the stair nose they sent is too dark to match any of the planks, so we’re arranging a swap with the supplier.

The furnace guys are coming tomorrow to install a humidistat on the furnace so that the floor will have a more consistent environment to live in.

The planks will be sorted into square footage categories, the transition pieces counted, and then all the “lumber” (can you call grass a “lumber”?) will be stacked around the house in the rooms it will go into, to acclimate for a week. The plan is to have the lightest planks in the narrow hallway in the center of the house, and the darkest planks in the living room which gets a lot of light. All the hues and textures will be blended into each other gradually using the “transition” pieces that have a little of each.

  1. I am very impressed that the dog was unable to chew into a piece.
Am also impressed by the work you guy is doing sorting hues to mix them.
Do not think it would ever occur to ones we had in to do flooring so it was good there was none of that to do.

  2. It would never have occurred to me, either. All the photos I’ve seen look like patchwork. I think he’s right that this will look better.

  3. Hey,

How about some movies of the “hockey” cat and the floors.

  4. “Bob” just snapped the line down the hallway yesterday. He’s planning to finish painting my bedroom tomorrow and then the planks that have been acclimating in there will go down. I’ll take a photo then.

In the meantime he’s cut out all around the living room wall, mapped out all the joists under there and laid the luan. It turns out that the joists are higgledy-piggledy under the living room and even go a perpendicular direction on the side toward the front of the house. We’re going to have to hang crosswise beams from them in order for the floor to go down right over them.

  5. Oh – and he’s been building out all the walls so they’re actually straight and square along the floors.

A bamboo stair nose should hopefully be coming this week and also he’s going to have to rebuild the stairs before that goes down.
